First, a short message. . .
WRITING AND SELLING FOR PROFIT
Writing "Correspondence Courses" and/or "How-To" manuals can
be an excellent way to satisfy your need for additional income, and
at the same time, express your talents. Many people like yourself
have found a new way of life by preparing and selling their own
writing efforts. You can do the same by following the step-by-step
instructions as outlined in the forthcoming pages.
Keep in mind as you write that you have the opportunity of
becoming financially sound and morally strong by helping others help
themselves through your ability to relate knowledge through writing.
Your success will be measured not only by the money you make, but
also by the number of people you help.
So, study and work hard. Your efforts will be well rewarded.

SELECTING STUDY MATERIAL THAT WILL SELL
There are several initial steps that you must take in order
to create educational material that will sell. They are:
1. Select study material that will sell
2. Gather pertinent data about the study material
you will be writing about.
First, you must decide upon what type of educational
material the public is in need of and is willing to buy. To do
this, survey the following publications to see where the interest
is with respect to education. There are two main sources.
1. Newspapers
2. Magazines
The newspaper want ad section is an excellent place to
locate educational needs. Pay particular attention to the
classification entitled "Trainees." This will give you some clues
as to where some basic home study training could help somebody gain
employment.
Also, check all the want ads that relate to trade skill
employment that only requires a basic understanding in order to
gain the job. These are generally easy to spot as you read through
each job description.
The second place to gain some insight as to what study
material to create is trade and other magazines. You will also
notice that most magazines have a number of correspondence schools
advertising their courses. Most of these schools are large
organizations that have spent a great deal of money researching the
educational needs of the general public. So, when you see their
ads, pay attention to them because they are selling study material
that is needed and is selling.
I have found that the best magazines to inspect are:
1. Popular Science
2. Popular Mechanics
3. Money Making Opportunities
4. Weekly and monthly tabloids.
ItÆs also a good idea to write to some of the school listed
in the above mentioned magazines to see what they offer and at what
price it is being offered. This is especially true if you want to
write a course similar to the one that they are selling. By reading
their material, you can get a very good idea what you should put
into the course you are writing. And, as mentioned, you can get an
idea of how much to charge. The information collected should be
very worthwhile to you.
You should select a course based on the following:
1. The need of the buying public.
2. What is easy for you to write.
3. How easy it is to gather data.
The need of the buying public should always be your first
consideration before writing any study material. You certainly
donÆt want to write something and not be able to sell it to anybody.
Secondly, write about subjects that you find easy to
understand and that are easy for you to write about. If you
struggle to write about a particular subject, you will find that the
end result will not be what you had originally planned.
Lastly, select subjects that you can easily gather data
about. To do the complete writing that you want, be sure that you
are able to secure all the information necessary to do a complete
study program. Some of the most popular study programs to write
about are given in the list below. Most of them are now being sold
by schools and organizations, but the need is such that there is
always a need for fresh, updated work.
1. Accounting
2. Bookkeeping
3. Drafting
4. Computer Programming/Repair
5. Money-Saving Strategies
4. Fashion Modeling
5. Interior Decorator
7. Landscaping
8. Locksmith
9. Motel Management
10. Motorcycle Repair
11. NurseÆs Aid
12. Printing
13. Security Investigator
14. Small Engine Repair
15. Writing
The above listing is only a partial number of subjects you
could write about and sell. As I already mentioned, look at the
different publications to find other educational material that is
now being offered.
Be careful, especially when you are starting in the field of
writing educational material, that you donÆt write about subjects
that nobody is interested in buying. You waste your time and the
expense of preparing the material for selling. Write about
interesting and popular subjects and you wonÆt go wrong.

GATHERING DATA
The next area of concern, after deciding upon the subject
matter of study material, is to gather data about the educational
material you will be writing. This can be done by obtaining
information from one or more of the following places:
1. Library
2. Book Store
3. Other similar collections of study material
The library has always been a place where a wealth of
related study material information could be found. ItÆs a simple
matter to consult the indexing file to locate the books that contain
the information you are seeking.
Be sure to check out enough books about the subject matter
to do a thorough job of writing. By studying the books, you should
gain adequate knowledge about the subject matter to write
intelligently about the study material. If not, seek more
information elsewhere.
Another good source of information is your local book store.
A good book store will usually have in their inventory an ample
selection of books on most subjects. Of course, the difference
between the books you get at the book store and the library is that
one is free and at the other you have to buy the material.
One of the best sources of study information is having
possession of another course that is based on the same subject
matter that you will be writing about.
You will find that all correspondence courses and self-help
manuals are copyrighted, so it is illegal to copy the information
word-for-word. However, what you can do is study the material, as
you would books from the library or book store, and then write about
what you have learned. This is perfectly legal and is being done by
many everyday.
Used correspondence courses can be purchased from several
sources. You will usually find firms that will sell and rent used
courses listed in magazines that were previously listed. The price
is generally low and the value high. This is especially true if you
are going to use the course as your prime source of information.
Be sure to gather enough information before proceeding into
the actual writing of the course. The more study material you
write, the easier it will be for you the create the courses you
want.
