  11.          WRITING AND SELLING FOR PROFIT

  14.     Writing "Correspondence Courses" and/or "How-To" manuals can
  15. be an excellent way to satisfy your need for additional income, and 
  16. at the same time, express your talents.  Many people like yourself 
  17. have found a new way of life by preparing and selling their own 
  18. writing efforts.  You can do the same by following the step-by-step 
  19. instructions as outlined in the forthcoming pages.

  21.     Keep in mind as you write that you have the opportunity of 
  22. becoming financially sound and morally strong by helping others help
  23. themselves through your ability to relate knowledge through writing.  
  24. Your success will be measured not only by the money you make, but 
  25. also by the number of people you help.

  32.         SELECTING STUDY MATERIAL THAT WILL SELL

  35.     There are several initial steps that you must take in order 
  36. to create educational material that will sell.  They are: 
  37.  
  38.         1.  Select study material that will sell 
  39.         2.  Gather pertinent data about the study material 
  40.             you will be writing about. 
  41.  
  42.     First, you must decide upon what type of educational 
  43. material the public is in need of and is willing to buy.  To do 
  44. this, survey the following publications to see where the interest 
  45. is with respect to education.  There are two main sources. 
  46.  
  47.         1.  Newspapers 
  48.         2.  Magazines 
  49.  
  50.     The newspaper want ad section is an excellent place to 
  51. locate educational needs.  Pay particular attention to the 
  52. classification entitled "Trainees."  This will give you some clues 
  53. as to where some basic home study training could help somebody gain 
  54. employment.

  56.     Also, check all the want ads that relate to trade skill 
  57. employment that only requires a basic understanding in order to 
  58. gain the job.  These are generally easy to spot as you read through 
  59. each job description.

  61.     The second place to gain some insight as to what study 
  62. material to create is trade and other magazines.  You will also 
  63. notice that most magazines have a number of correspondence schools 
  64. advertising their courses.  Most of these schools are large 
  65. organizations that have spent a great deal of money researching the 
  66. educational needs of the general public.  So, when you see their 
  67. ads, pay attention to them because they are selling study material 
  68. that is needed and is selling.

  70. I have found that the best magazines to inspect are: 
  71.  
  72.         1.  Popular Science 
  73.         2.  Popular Mechanics 
  74.         3.  Money Making Opportunities 
  75.         4.  Weekly and monthly tabloids.

  77.     ItÆs also a good idea to write to some of the school listed 
  78. in the above mentioned magazines to see what they offer and at what 
  79. price it is being offered.  This is especially true if you want to 
  80. write a course similar to the one that they are selling.  By reading 
  81. their material, you can get a very good idea what you should put 
  82. into the course you are writing.  And, as mentioned, you can get an 
  83. idea of how much to charge.  The information collected should be 
  84. very worthwhile to you.

  86.     You should select a course based on the following:

  88.         1.  The need of the buying public. 
  89.         2.  What is easy for you to write. 
  90.         3.  How easy it is to gather data. 
  91.  
  92.     The need of the buying public should always be your first 
  93. consideration before writing any study material.  You certainly 
  94. donÆt want to write something and not be able to sell it to anybody.

  96.     Secondly, write about subjects that you find easy to 
  97. understand and that are easy for you to write about.  If you 
  98. struggle to write about a particular subject, you will find that the 
  99. end result will not be what you had originally planned.

  101.     Lastly, select subjects that you can easily gather data 
  102. about.  To do the complete writing that you want, be sure that you 
  103. are able to secure all the information necessary to do a complete 
  104. study program. Some of the most popular study programs to write 
  105. about are given in the list below.  Most of them are now being sold 
  106. by schools and organizations, but the need is such that there is 
  107. always a need for fresh, updated work.

  126.     The above listing is only a partial number of subjects you 
  127. could write about and sell.  As I already mentioned, look at the 
  128. different publications to find other educational material that is 
  129. now being offered.

  131.     Be careful, especially when you are starting in the field of
  132. writing educational material, that you donÆt write about subjects 
  133. that nobody is interested in buying.  You waste your time and the 
  134. expense of preparing the material for selling.  Write about 
  135. interesting and popular subjects and you wonÆt go wrong.

  140.              GATHERING DATA

  143.     The next area of concern, after deciding upon the subject 
  144. matter of study material, is to gather data about the educational 
  145. material you will be writing.  This can be done by obtaining 
  146. information from one or more of the following places:

  148.         1.  Library 
  149.         2.  Book Store 
  150.         3.  Other similar collections of study material 
  151.  
  152.     The library has always been a place where a wealth of 
  153. related study material information could be found.  ItÆs a simple 
  154. matter to consult the indexing file to locate the books that contain
  155. the information you are seeking.

  157.     Be sure to check out enough books about the subject matter 
  158. to do a thorough job of writing.  By studying the books, you should 
  159. gain adequate knowledge about the subject matter to write 
  160. intelligently about the study material.  If not, seek more 
  161. information elsewhere.

  163.     Another good source of information is your local book store.
  164. A good book store will usually have in their inventory an ample 
  165. selection of books on most subjects.  Of course, the difference 
  166. between the books you get at the book store and the library is that 
  167. one is free and at the other you have to buy the material.

  169.     One of the best sources of study information is having 
  170. possession of another course that is based on the same subject 
  171. matter that you will be writing about.

  173.     You will find that all correspondence courses and self-help 
  174. manuals are copyrighted, so it is illegal to copy the information 
  175. word-for-word.  However, what you can do is study the material, as 
  176. you would books from the library or book store, and then write about
  177. what you have learned.  This is perfectly legal and is being done by 
  178. many everyday.

  180.     Used correspondence courses can be purchased from several 
  181. sources.  You will usually find firms that will sell and rent used 
  182. courses listed in magazines that were previously listed.  The price 
  183. is generally low and the value high.  This is especially true if you
  184. are going to use the course as your prime source of information.

  186.     Be sure to gather enough information before proceeding into 
  187. the actual writing of the course.  The more study material you 
  188. write, the easier it will be for you the create the courses you 
  189. want.
